Scientific evidence

What the evidence says about exercise after 60

The World Health Organization recommends that older adults do strength training at least two days a week and varied activity that emphasises balance and strength at least three days a week, to improve function and prevent falls.

A Cochrane review of randomised trials found that exercise programmes reduce the rate of falls in older people living in the community by around 23%. Programmes built on balance and functional exercises had the clearest effect.

Results vary between people. Exercise complements medical care and does not replace it.

  • World Health Organization. Guidelines on physical activity and sedentary behaviour. 2020.
  • Sherrington et al. Exercise for preventing falls in older people living in the community. Cochrane Database Syst Rev. 2019.

The result

More strength for everyday life. More confidence on your feet.

The aim is not to do more, but to keep doing what matters to you.

  • ✓ Exercises adapted to your joints, bones and medication.
  • ✓ Balance work to feel steadier on stairs, slopes and uneven ground.
  • ✓ Clear progress you can notice in daily life.
  • ✓ Sessions at home, so there is no travel and no gym.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to start strength training after 60, or even after 75?+

For most people, yes. Strength responds to training at any age. The programme starts at a level you can manage and progresses gradually, taking your health and medication into account.

I have osteoporosis or arthritis. Can I still do strength training?+

In most cases, yes, and it is usually recommended. Exercises and loads are chosen to suit your joints and bones, and anything that causes problems is adapted.

Can exercise really reduce falls?+

Yes. A Cochrane review found that exercise reduces the rate of falls in older people living at home by around 23%, especially programmes that include balance and functional exercises.

Can a family member contact you for me?+

Of course. A family member can get in touch first, and we then speak with the person who will train to agree the plan together.

Are sessions in English?+

Yes, sessions can be run in English or Spanish. For the first contact, the form is the quickest way to reach us: tell us what you need and we will reply in English.

How much does it cost?+

Fees depend on where the sessions take place, how many you need and the type of programme. Tell us your situation and we will send you a tailored quote.
